Welcome to the firearm FAQ!

I created this site to help guide the beginning rifle and pistol handloader through the often confusing process of reloading. When I first began loading, I didn’t really have anyone to guide me through the process, and I found myself at the mercy of information overload with all of the specific nomenclature and processes of the trade. This site will attempt to introduce all of this information in a clear manner, with detailed photos and step by step video clips to help ease some of the initial confusion. I hope this site proves a valuable resource in your new endeavor.

I've found myself working on a number of additional articles regarding firearms and whatnot, so stay tuned for those. For now, hopefully this will help you get started safely.

Why Reload?

People reload for three main reasons:

  1. You can make custom rounds that are tuned to your particular rifle or pistol. Reloaded cartridges will shrink your groups like you wouldn’t believe.
  2. Over the long run, it saves money. I emphasize over the long run. You’ll see the greatest savings through pistol rounds and match rifle rounds.
  3. It’s rewarding knowing that you built the rounds you are shooting, plus it’s a lot of fun tinkering with the rounds to get the best results. And you’ll learn a lot and make some good friends in the process.

The Basics

Let’s get down to business. The cartridge is made up of four (4) components:

  1. Bullet
  2. Primer
  3. Case
  4. Powder (propellant)

Overview of bullet components

Both rifle and pistol rounds have these four components. No more, no less. The goal of reloading is to take these four components and come up with a good-as-new round that is more accurate and less expensive than the rounds you buy at the store.
